Bill would require proof of citizenship to vote

Posted:

NASHVILLE (AP) -- Senate Majority Leader Mark Norris says his proposal to require proof of citizenship in order to register to vote in Tennessee is not meant to restrict access to the ballot box.

Norris, a Collierville Republican, is sponsoring a measure to require people seeking to register to vote to prove their citizenship with documents like driver's licenses, passports or birth certificates.

Sen. Thelma Harper, a Nashville Democrat, argues the proposal would hurt voter registration drives at places like supermarkets, churches and colleges.

Norris agreed to delay a vote in the Senate State and Local Government Committee for two weeks so he can work to get members of the panel comfortable with the proposal.

Read the proposed bill: SB1999.
