Jefferson Co. homeowners bothered by flyers from KKK

WHITE PINE (WATE) -- Residents of a neighborhood just outside White Pine are afraid they're being singled out by the Ku Klux Klan after flyers were left by their mailboxes.

"I went out to pick up the mail and said what's this," says one of the homeowners, Clif Shupe.

He says he's still shocked by what's written on the flyers.

"When I started to read it, and found out it was from the Klan, it's wrong," Shupe says. "They do not need to put out this kind of propaganda with all the trouble we're having in the country today."

Shupe's home borders Jefferson and Hamblen counties, and he says the flyers were dropped beside mailboxes along his small road all the way into White Pine.

"We haven't been bothered for years, and now they're coming around and throwing them all over the place," Shupe says.

Shupe also says some of his neighbors are equally bothered by the flyer that says "Wake up White America" and asks the public to join the group in the fight against illegal immigrants, homosexuality, Black, Hispanic, Asian gangs and the list goes on.

"They're the ones causing all the problems," Shupe says.

He admits he's worried the KKK will go beyond just leaving flyers behind. "I figure if they can't get through to people, they are going to start their parades and everything again and start protesting and cause problems. Something needs to be done."

Shupe contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff's Department, but he said they couldn't be of any help.

When 6 News spoke with Sheriff David Davenport by phone Wednesday, he said he knew nothing about the flyers.
