BELL BUCKLE (AP) -- An artist has been chosen to create a life-size bronze statue of former Gov. Ned R. McWherter.
The Ned R. McWherter Monument Commission announced that Bell Buckle artist Russ Faxon has been commissioned to do the work.
Faxon, a native of Bowling Green, Ky., told the Shelbyville Times-Gazette that he was honored because McWherter "is one of the most admired and beloved governors this state has ever had."
Some of Faxon's other work is shown at the Tullahoma Fine Arts Center, the Cookeville hospital and St. Augustine's Nashville.
McWherter, a native of Weakley County, was governor from 1987 to 1995.
A Democrat, he was a member of the Tennessee House of Representatives from 1968 to 1986, including seven consecutive terms as speaker.
