Alexander says the public worries about 'runaway government'

KNOXVILLE (AP) -- Tennessee Sen. Lamar Alexander says the American people are worried about more than health care plans and climate change proposals coming out of Washington.

The Senate's third-ranking Republican told a teleconference Tuesday that the larger message senators have heard during their August recess is the public is scared about a "runaway government" that seems to be coming up with "one big new idea every day involving a Washington takeover."

Alexander says Washington can't do it all, or all at once.

He said Congress and the White House must set priorities and "start re-earning the trust of the American people step by step, hopefully in a bipartisan way, to solve big problems."

That chance comes next week when Congress returns to work.
