KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- A restaurant received a health inspection score so low it closed its doors.

The restaurant that went out of business was not the lowest scoring place of the week, it was in the middle of the pack.

The lowest grade, a 49, went to Best Bagels in Town, 120 S. Peters Road.

A score below 70 is considered a unsanitary.

At Best Bagels in Town, the inspector reported seeing flies in the kitchen.

He writes employees were smoking in a back room. No one is allowed to light up anymore in a restaurant, including employees.

The dishwasher had no sanitizer in it. Also, the water running through it was dirty.

The inspector also watched an employee forget to wash his hands after touching his face and clothes.

Hardee's, 3926 Asheville Highway: Grade: 56

At Hardees's, clean knives and spatulas were stored in a dirty rack. The inspector also found dirty rags sitting on a counter, but they belonged in a sanitizer bucket.

He says he watched an kitchen employee forget to wash his hands after handling a dirty container.

Golden City Asian Cuisine, 6535 Kingston Pike - Grade: 59

Golden City Asian Cuisine just opened this week. The inspector reports finding moldy cheese there.

There was no sanitizer running through the dishwasher.

Also, raw meat was stored next to sauce. At restaurants, raw food has to be covered and kept away from cooked food to prevent cross contamination.

Don Pablo's, Knoxville Center Drive - Grade: 59

The inspector says at Don Pablo's near Knoxville Center Mall there was no cold water at the hand sink in the employee restroom.

At a kitchen hand sink, hot water was 136 degrees, but 120 degrees is as hot as you can take it before being scaled.

There were also several water leaks at Don Pablo's.

China City Restaurant, Asheville Highway - Grade: 60

China City Restaurant has failed before. A sign at the door now says it's closed.

When inspected, some home-canned jelly was found in the cooler. Food has to come from an approved and licensed source.

Flies were found in the kitchen and there were five severely dented cans in the storage room.

Mimi's Cafe, 10945 Parkside Drive - Grade: 63

Mimi's Restaurant in Turkey Creek had wastewater on the floor and toxic chemicals not stored properly.

Stir Fry Cafe, 11001 Parkside Drive - Grade: 65

Also on Parkside Drive in Turkey Creek, Stir Fry Cafe failed to get a passing grade because of uncovered food stored in the cooler.

The health inspector reports an employee returned from the restroom without washing his or her hands before handling food.

Highest grades of the week:

  • Starbucks, Cumberland Avenue - Grade: 96.
  • Chick Fil-A at St. Mary's Hospital on Oak Hill Avenue - Grade: 95
  • House of Dragon, also at St. Mary's Hospital - Grade: 90

Inspection reports are supposed to be posted where you can see them.
