KNOXVILLE (AP) -- Volunteers in Knoxville will celebrate Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day two days early by revitalizing the historic Alex Haley Heritage Square in Morningside Park.
They will gather Saturday to do the work under the sponsorship of the city of Knoxville, the group Keep Knoxville Beautiful and others.
They will plant, weed, paint and pick up litter. Organizers said the work will symbolize King's spirit of service.
Haley, who grew up in Henning, Tenn., is best known for his Pulitzer Prize-winning novel "Roots."
He also wrote "The Autobiography of Malcolm X," "Queen" and "A Different Kind of Christmas."
Haley died in 1992.
