NASHVILLE (AP) -- Tennessee Secretary of State Riley Darnell says ending the state's presidential preference primary election would save money in tough times.
Darnell told state lawmakers Tuesday the timing of the primary -- the first Tuesday of March in presidential election years -- is no longer a factor nationally.
In the 2004 election, 15 states and the District of Columbia plan to conduct caucuses or primaries in the weeks before Tennessee's scheduled March 9 primary. Darnell says by the time Tennessee gets to its primary, the issues have been resolved.
He says eliminating it would save Tennessee $3.5 million every four years.
