KNOXVILLE (WATE) - Haywood Harris, the former associate athletics director for media relations at the University of Tennessee, and long time athletic department employee, has passed away.
He was 80 years old.
Harris graduated from the University of Tennessee in 1951, and was appointed sports information director for UT by legendary Vols football coach Gen. Robert Neyland in 1961.
He wrote for The Charlotte Observer and The Knoxville Journal before returning to the University of Tennessee in the late 1950s. He also served as Assistant Athletic Director and Associate Athletic Director of Media Relations at UT.
Harris retired from full-time duties at UT in 2000, but continued working at the university in a variety of areas, including serving as the historian for the athletic department.
Friends may call at their convenience Friday and Saturday at Knoxville's Rose Mortuary-Mann Heritage Chapel at 6200 Kingston Pike in Knoxville.
