WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (WATE and AP) -- After withdrawing from consideration at UT, Ron Wellman has signed to stay on as athletic director at Wake Forest. He's agreed in principle to a contract that will keep him at Wake Forest as head of the athletic department.

Wellman was wooed by Tennessee this year to fill the job being vacated by Doug Dickey, who is retiring in June.

His departure leaves just one candidate named in a memo released by UT president Dr. John Shumaker last week, UT Associate Athletics Director Mike Hamilton.

Also last week, Texas Christian athletics director Eric Hyman issued a statement saying he's no longer a candidate.

There may be other candidates, however. A source close to the search told 6 Sports there are other un-named candidates still being considered.

Wellman had been considered for other top AD jobs in the last few years. He withdrew from consideration for Arizona State and Michigan in 2000.

Terms of his new contract weren't released. Wellman has run Wake's sports programs since 1992. He signed football coach Jim Grobe and basketball coach Skip Prosser to ten-year contracts in the past four months. Prosser stayed at Wake Forest despite overtures last month from Pittsburgh.
