HARRIMAN (AP) -- Tennessee's top state environmental official has gone on record opposing a mining rule change that opponents say would foul streams.
At a hearing in Harriman Tuesday, a letter from Environment and Conservation Commissioner Betsy Child was presented, urging federal officials to scrap the new rule. It would allow mining debris to be dumped within 100 feet of streams.
About 100 people attended the hearing and none spoke in favor of the proposed change.
The issue has become more pointed with the advent of cross-ridge or "mountain top mining."
An official of the environmental group Save Our Cumberland Mountains calls the Bredesen administration position "a good first step."
