Veazey and Painter take over lead in Knoxville Open's second round

June 4, 2004

FARRAGUT (WATE) -- Memphis native Vance Veazey and Australian Anthony Painter took over the lead of the Knoxville Open Friday, going ten-under-par for the tournament.

Another Australian, Paul Gow, took third place with a nine-under-par 135, and Kyle Thompson came in one stroke further behind at minus-eight.

Play was delayed about an hour and a half by early morning showers, but that didn't cool off Veazey or Painter in the second round at Fox Den Country Club.

Painter started late in the day with some hot shooting, sinking seven birdies in his first ten holes. He came into the clubhouse nailing down a spot at the top with another birdie putt on the 18th.

Despite bogies on the second and fifteenth holes, Veazey dropped seven birdies and an eagle, including a 35-foot birdie putt on the sixth, to finish seven-under-par 65 for the day. He started the day in a 15-way tie for 12th.

"So far I ve been putting the ball in the fairway and that's what you need to do out here," Veazey said. "Today, the putter was there and I made some good putts. I putted the ball well today, so that's where I got the good round out of it."

Gow says he was pleased to remain just one stroke back for two days in a row. He believes he may be due for a win.

"I'm hitting the ball pretty well off the tee, you know, straight not long," he said. "But I'm hitting a lot of greens so that always helps. It gets frustrating when you don't hole putts. I holed a lot of putts last week so it might be my turn Sunday afternoon."

Meanwhile, Guy Boros and Dan Olsen struggled after sharing the lead at six-under-par 66 in the opening round Thursday. Boros finished the day one-over-par thanks to three bogies. Olsen double-bogied the eighth hole and finished one-under-par 71. [ Boros and Olsen share first round lead ]

All told, 62 players stayed above the cut line fell at two-under-par 142 to advance to the final two rounds.
