Hiwassee College appealing vote to lift accreditation

December 10, 2004

CHATTANOOGA (AP) -- Hiwassee College is appealing a vote to lift its accreditation.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools voted Monday to remove the Madisonville college because of financial problems.

Hiwassee administrators say a decision on their appeal isn't likely until March 2005.

College President James Noseworthy calls the pending loss of accreditation "unjust," saying the school's endowment has grown by $1.5 million and its operating budget is up by $200,000, both in the last year.

About 400 students attend the 150-year-old liberal arts school, which is affiliated with the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church.
