KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- The Knox County Health Department Wednesday is alerting people at a high risk for the flu that more shots are becoming available.

Doctor's offices and hospitals have been donating the spare shots to the health department on a daily basis.

There are just under 100 shots available Wednesday.

The shots are free. They're available on a first come, first serve basis.

If you're in a high risk category, the health department says to call daily at (865)-215-5016 to find out if shots are still available.

High risk categories include:

  • all children aged 6–23 months
  • adults aged 65 years
  • persons aged 2–64 years with underlying chronic medical conditions
  • all women who will be pregnant during the influenza season
  • residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities
  • children aged 2–18 years on chronic aspirin therapy
  • health-care workers involved in direct patient care
  • out-of-home caregivers and household contacts of children aged 6 months
