OAK RIDGE (AP) -- A hawk that took up residence inside the Y-12 nuclear weapons plant and nearly died because of it has been returned to the wild.

The pigeon-sized American kestrel got oil on her feathers while inside the plant. She was unable to fly when workers noticed her and used heavy gloves to capture her.

She was then taken to the Clinch River Raptor Center where her feathers were cleaned and she was fed meal worms and mice from Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

The bird was then taken back to the Y-12 complex and successfully released last week.
