Gov. expected to sign amusement park bill

Gov. expected to sign amusement park bill

May 25, 2005

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- A proposal to improve the safety and regulation of amusement park rides in Tennessee is one signature away from becoming a law.

Gov. Bredesen is expected to sign a bill that lawmakers passed after June Alexander fell to her death from a ride at the Rockin' Raceway in March 2004.

A jury found Raceway manager Charles Martin guilty of reckless homicide for Alexander's death. Prosecutors argued that someone rigged the electronics board for the ride, which prevented the safety mechanisms from working correctly.

The bill waiting for the governor's signature would require annual inspections of rides.

Amusement parks would also have to carry a $1 million insurance policy and have an operating permit.
