Controversial state tourism contract being canceled

June 23, 2005

NASHVILLE (AP) -- A controversial state tourism department contract awarded to an associate of Tourism Commissioner Susan Whitaker is being canceled.

So says the department.

The two-year, $720,000 deal with Ackermann PR will be terminated at the end of September.

The firm was run by Knoxville public relations executive Cathy Ackermann, who was on Gov. Bredesen's transition team. She was part of an outspoken group of Republicans that supported Bredesen's candidacy in 2002.

Whitaker says canceling the contract would save taxpayers about $125,000 a year by having state employees handle the tourism campaign instead of paying a private contractor.
