NASHVILLE (AP) -- People who fled Hurricane Katrina to Tennessee and intend to remain are eligible for public health care coverage.
Human Services Department spokeswoman Michelle Mowery-Johnson says some evacuees from states affected by last weeks hurricane already have applied for TennCare at offices around the state. TennCare Bureau spokeswoman Marilyn Elam says the agency isn't "inviting people to sign on." Since July, thousands of Tennessee residents have lost Tenn-Care coverage and an estimated 191,000 others have lost prescription drug coverage under Gov. Phil Bredesen's reform plan. A lawyer for the Tennessee Justice Center says the move to provide health insurance to evacuees underscores how important health care is for sick and poor people. Copyright 2005 Associated Press.
