KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- A Knoxville police officer shot and killed a suspect involved in a fatal stabbing at an apartment Wednesday afternoon.

The police department says officers responded to 911 calls about an altercation at Creek Ridge Apartments at 5700 Pleasant Ridge Road.

The officers found 33-year-old Charles Larrell Clemons of Roane County stabbing 49-year-old James Seals, of Knoxville.

According to the police department Officer Shawn Peoples told Clemons to drop the knife. After Clemons ignored the command, the officer shot him. Clemons was taken to UT Medical Center, where he died.

Officer Peoples was also taken to UT Medical Center, as part of standard procedure. He was not hurt.

The stabbing victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators haven't said how many times the officer shot Clemons or where he was hit.

The officer is on paid administrative leave while the incident is being investigated. Police say they can't comment yet on the suspects' relationship or the motive for the stabbing.
