KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- The hunt for two men and a woman involved in the shooting of a Knox County deputy is in its second day.

Officers in several East Tennessee counties are looking for the suspects, who are believed to be traveling in a late 1980s white Dodge or Chevy van with a ladder mounted on top.

One of the men in the van, which appeared to be broken down, fired a shotgun at Deputy Cory Johnson Tuesday afternoon, hitting him in the left shoulder after he stopped to help.

"All of the occupants of the van were in the back of the van and I could see a male and a female. When they opened the door there was another male leaning over the female and they started talking back and forth in Spanish. Then the female was yelling 'Help!'" Johnson told 6 News Tuesday night.

He said that was the turning point. "As soon as she yelled help that's when I stepped away from the door and they shot, and that's when I started returning fire." The van sped away.

Knox County dispatch says Wednesday they have received hundreds of calls from people who have spotted similar vans and they have pulled over dozens of vehicles. But there is still no sign of the suspects.

Investigators have checked local missing persons reports but found no matches to the female suspect.

The sheriff's office has alerted law enforcement agencies across the Southeast to be on the lookout for the suspects and the van.

Johnson was released from the hospital Tuesday night after doctors removed the bullet from his shoulder.

Investigators ask anyone with information about the suspects to call (865)-215-4010.
