MARYVILLE (WATE) -- A 12-year-old boy in Maryville will spend the weekend inside a juvenile detention center after he was charged with handling a BB gun at school Friday.
The sixth grader was arrested at Everett Learning Center on Jett Road.
According to a press release from the Blount County Sheriff's Department, two teachers saw the boy walking along the back fence line of the Everett campus with what appeared to be a rifle.
The teachers approached the boy, and when he saw them, he dropped the weapon and ran behind an outbuilding.
The teachers talked him out from behind the building and he was restrained until deputies arrived. The weapon, an unloaded Crossman pellet/BB gun, was retrieved.
The boy told deputies he found the gun leaning against a bench near the football field.
He's charged with delinquency by possession of a weapon.
The child will have a hearing in Blount County on Monday.
