Stop annoying calls from telemarketers

Tired of being called by telemarketers? Tennessee's Do Not Call list can help. By adding your name to the list, phone solicitors will not be able to call you, except within certain limitations.

You can ask for your home phone number to be put on the list by going to the Tennessee Regulatory Authority's website or by calling toll free at 1-800-342-8359. Business numbers cannot be put on the list.

Registered numbers will be in effect 60 days from the date you registered. In other words, you still may get unwanted calls for at least two months. After that time, telemarketers will be fined $2,000 if they call your home.

What kinds of calls will be stopped when my number is on "Do Not Call" List?

Businesses selling consumer goods and services by telephone may not call your telephone number is it is on the Do Not Call Register.

I'm on the list, but I still get calls. Why?

There are some exemptions to the law.

  • Telephone solicitors may still call if they are responding to an invitation or permission you have given them.
  • Solicitors may call on behalf of a not-for-profit organization if a member of the organization is making the call.
  • Soliciting is allowed if the person or business making the telephone call has had a business relationship with you in the 12 months.
  • Solicitation is permitted if the business calling does not sell or engage in telephone solicitation and does not make more than three calls in any one calendar week.

More information is available at the Tennessee Regulatory Authority's website, including a form you can print out and mail to TRA to report a business that has abused the law. Also, if you're not sure you're on the list you can lookup your phone number.
