KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- A Knoxville man who served in Iraq and once directed county public works has died.
Fifty-four-year-old Bill Kervin died suddenly Saturday at Parkwest Medical Center. Family friends say he had a heart attack.
Kervin had recently returned from an 18-month tour of duty in Iraq with the 278th Regimental Combat Team where he served as an operations sergeant major. He served in the 278th for 27 years.
In addition to his military career, Kervin had served as the director of Knox County public works.
He also helped many public works agencies across the state.
Kervin leaves behind a wife and daughter.
The family held his funeral Tuesday night.
Kervin was buried Wednesday morning with full military honors at the Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery. Members of the 278th were honorary pallbearers.
