Union to return to work at Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin

October 22, 2006

ERWIN (AP) -- Nuclear Fuel Services in Erwin has accepted an offer from union employees to return to work unconditionally.

NFS spokesman Tony Treadway says the company made the decision yesterday, and company officials will meet with the workers Wednesday to discuss details about their return.

The agreement ends a week of anticipation by the United Steelworkers local, which voted last Sunday to return to work unconditionally in hopes of forcing the company back to the bargaining table.

Nearly 370 union workers walked out May 15 at the end of a four-year contract after rejecting a six-year pact that would have changed workers' retirement and health insurance plans and work rules.

The company did not comment yesterday on the negotiations aspect of the return to work.
