SEYMOUR (WATE) -- A Sevier County student is charged with bringing a gun to school.
The Seymour Middle Schooler arrived Wednesday with a gun in his backpack.
Luckily, the gun was never removed and the bag was confiscated before any shots were fired.
Since the student is a juvenile, his name has not been released.
Sevier County Schools Director Jack Parton issued a release that reads "Based on a preliminary investigation, the gun was never taken from the student's backpack. As soon as information about the presence of the gun was relayed to the principal, action was immediately taken to deal with the situation."
The Sevier County Sheriff's Department has charged the student with carrying a weapon on school property. That's a class A felony with a maximum penalty of six years imprisonment.
6 News has also learned the incident is being treated as a juvenile matter and the student is currently being held in the Sevier County Juvenile Detention Center.
