Shuler urges TVA to improve air quality in Smokies

February 15, 2007

WASHINGTON (AP) -- North Carolina Congressman Heath Shuler is pressing TVA to improve air quality in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

The 35-year-old Democrat grew up in Swain County, in the North Carolina mountains.

He was a quarterback for the University of Tennessee before he turned pro.

TVA President and CEO Tom Kilgore told the House water resources subcommittee Wednesday that the agency plans to spend $350 million installing scrubbers and other technology to reduce haze and smog-forming pollutants at its John Sevier plant in Rogersville, Tennessee.

Kilgore told Shuler TVA will continue to clean the air.
