OAK RIDGE (WATE) -- An Oak Ridge middle school student is in critical condition Friday night after being hit by a school bus.

It happened at the intersection of Illinois Avenue and the Oak Ridge Turnpike around 2:55 p.m.

Police say 12-year-old Ashley Paine was riding her bike home from Robertsville Middle School when she somehow fell off and landed in the path of a school bus.

Paine was then hit by the rear tires.

Brittany Kellison saw the accident from another school bus following behind. "She was just laying there. Her bike was laying there and the back tire was crushed over and she was not moving. We saw the bus driver freaking out and then we saw the girl's leg. It was backwards and crushed completely and there was blood running down the street," Kellison said.

Paine was flown to UT Medical Center by Lifestar.

None of the students on the bus or the driver were injured.

The students were transferred to another bus and taken home.

The accident is under investigation.
