KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- The new Knoxville Skatepark opened Thursday afternoon.

A ribbon cutting by officials and members of the Knoxville Skatepark Task Force was held at  Tyson Park.

The 15,000 square foot Skatepark got financial support from the city of Knoxville, Knox County, Lamar Advertising, citizens and skating legend Tony Hawk.

It's built on the site of the former University of Tennessee Lady Vols softball field.

All riders in the Skatepark are required to wear helmets.

The lights are scheduled to stay on until 9:00 p.m. Thursday, depending on the weather.

The Skatepark will be open until 9:00 each night for the rest of the winter.

In the spring, the lighting hours will be extended.
