KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- A lifelike, pregnant robot gave birth Wednesday at a Knoxville hospital.
The robot mom, called "Noelle," gave birth to her baby, "Hal" at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center.
Noelle has the heartbeat, lungs and vital signs of a real mother.
She's also programmed to have different medical issues while giving birth.
Her complications help nurses gain experience dealing with all kinds of complications, like how to react during a breech delivery, C-section or another problem, without putting a human patient's life at risk.
"We want to make it an automatic response. We practice it enough that we can take care of the situation a lot faster because time is essential in these situations," explains Fort Sanders nurse Cathy Fry.
The robots, also known as birthing simulator mannequins, cost $35,000.
A grant from the Fort Sanders Foundation covered the cost.
