KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- New York Jets quarterback and former Webb School standout Chad Pennington sees his annual summer football camp at Camp Webb as a look into the future. When his playing days are over, he still wants to be part of the game.
"Coaching is in my blood," says Pennington. "My dad (Elwood) coached for 30 years, and I've been around it my whole life. I have a passion for it. Not just for football, but to help young kids. I think through sports and athletics, a lot of education can be learned, both for them and us and coaches... if we handle it the right way."
It wasn't long ago that Pennington was just one of these kids himself. It's hard to believe that he's about to start his ninth season in the National Football League.
"I'm just trying to enjoy it," says Pennington. "I want to take advantage of it and relish being a professional athlete... enjoy the blessing and the opportunity."
The fun of the summertime is pretty much over with for Chad Pennington, because he has to compete against Kellen Clemens for the starting quarterback slot in New York.
Pennington will also be working as a mentor for the newest Jets quarterback, and former Tennessee Volunteer, Erik Ainge.
"He's (Ainge) doing a great job," says Pennington. "He has a great NFL frame, and had a great collegiate career. As a rookie you try to be a sponge and soak it all in... on and off the field."
"Erik is a Jet. I think it is exciting for him. I remember the experience and it will be something he will never forget."
Pennington reports to Jets training camp on July 19.
