Local body armor manufacturer lays off 114 workers temporarily

GRAINGER COUNTY (WATE) -- BAE Systems, which runs a body armor manufacturing plant in Grainger County, is temporarily cutting 114 jobs, officials announced Wednesday.

The reduction at the Individual Equipment facility affects the workers for up to 60 days.

BAE made the decision due to postponed Department of Defense contract awards.

"We attempted to reduce the impact of this reduction, and postponed this decision as long as possible," said Joe Coltman, vice president for the Individual Equipment business unit, in a press release.

During the layoff period, all the workers will receive employee benefits.

BAE Systems says it's waiting for the announcement of an improved outer tactical vest contract award from the Department of Defense.

Following that outcome, the company will make a decision about future employment in Grainger County.

BAE Systems opened its 33,000 square-foot Grainger County facility in November 2007, creating 185 new jobs at that time.
