NASHVILLE (WATE and AP) -- Veteran Tennessee House Speaker Jimmy Naifeh turned back a re-election challenge. He won 58 percent of the vote over Jesse Cannon with 80 percent of the ballots counted.
Naifeh, from Covington, has been in the Legislature since 1974 and speaker since 1991. He's supported a state income tax, an initiative that failed.
Locally, Parkey Strader took the District 14 seat vacated by H.E. Bittle. Strader took 64 percent of the vote over challengers Chris Oldham, Keith Downen and Kyle Phillips.
District 18 was another seat vacated by an incumbent. Steve Buttery held that office but chose not to run for re-election. Stacey Campfield won with 65 percent of the vote over Michael Carroll.
