Maryville teacher given 12 years in prison on sex abuse plea

September 14, 2005

MARYVILLE (AP) -- A Blount County judge has sentenced a Maryville school teacher to a dozen years in prison on child sex abuse counts.

Michael Arnell Hedrick pleaded guilty to one count of aggravated sexual battery and one of sexual battery.

Hedrick, 41, must serve 85 percent of the sentence.

Hedrick taught fourth grade at Eagleton Elementary School. Blount County Schools Director Alvin Hord says the abuse didn't involve any of Hedrick's students and didn't occur at school.

Hord suspended Hedrick last month when the investigation began.

The Blount County Sheriff's office says one of the victim's was a relative of Hedick's and the other was a friend of the family.
