New Knoxville hospital to be built on Baptist site downtown

New Knoxville hospital to be built on Baptist site downtown

Posted: Updated:

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- The site for Mercy Health Partners' new downtown Knoxville hospital is on the site of the current Baptist Hospital, but it will replace two hospitals.

The new hospital, Mercy Medical Center, is expected to open at the corner of Blount Avenue and Chapman Highway within the next three to five years.

The hospital will replace St. Mary's Medical Center, at 900 E. Oak Hill Avenue in North Knoxville, as well as Baptist Hospital.

The board chose the site because, "It is centrally located and provides convenient access for patients, staff and physicians. The site has nearly 23 acres, making it ideal for the construction of a state-of-the-art hospital as well as other associated facilities," said Debra London, president and CEO of Mercy Health Partners, in a press release.

Plus, London says the site will be a cornerstone of the South Knoxville Waterfront redevelopment project and contribute to revitalizing downtown.

Demolition of several of the older buildings on the Baptist campus will start this fall.

London emphasized Mercy's intent to work with its neighbors in North Knoxville's Oakwood - Lincoln Park community to make certain the decision has a positive impact on the area.

All plans are subject to regulatory approval.
