KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- A big debate is continuing over whether or not wine should be sold in your grocery store.
Two bills to permit wine sales in grocery stores failed in the last legislative session.
On Monday, wine sellers and grocery store executives met in Nashville to discuss the issue with legislators.
Under the current law, if you want to buy wine you must go to a liquor store. If you head to the grocery store you won't find it there.
A non-scientific poll conducted by 6 News shows strong sentiment to change the law, so why hasn't new legislation passed in the past?
First off, there hasn't been enough momentum. Legislators say there's been no overwhelming support in the past.
Secondly, some say if it passed the change could potentially put mom and pop liquor stores out of business, and those people are the lawmakers constituents.
Lastly, some fear the change would mean more alcohol in the hands of minors.
"I think the current process works well," said State Sen. Tim Burchett. "I am not a liquor or beer drinker. To me personally, it's like comparing apples to oranges. However, I am concerned about the tax collection as well as the safety of minors."
Burchett says it will most likely be brought up next legislative session in January. He also says it would be a very close vote.
If the measure does pass it could take effect by May or June.
