The Tennessee Department of Transportation closed the Henley Bridge across the Tennessee River in Knoxville on Jan. 3, 2011, in order to complete a 24- to 30-month refurbishing project.
The project was originally scheduled to be complete in June 2013, but the project was delayed after further deterioration within the bridge's concrete piers was discovered.
Additional delays happened after the deaths of two workers in separate incidents. A major contractor in the project, Britton Bridge LLC, was cited and fined by the Tennessee Occupational Safety and Health Administration for safety violations following the accidental deaths.
The bridge finally reopened to traffic on October 17, 2013, but lane closures and continued work were expected until June 3, 2014. More information is available at www.tdot.state.tn.us/henley.
