Dollywood's Splash Country hosts 2016 Water Safety Day

Water park helped attempt to break record for world's largest swimming lesson

WATE 6 On Your Side Staff - PIGEON FORGE (WATE) - Dollywood's Splash Country hosted its annual Water Safety Day on Friday in conjunction with the World's Largest Swimming Lesson.

The park, children and adults played a key role in helping a worldwide effort to attempt to break the world's largest swimming lesson record. However, none of this would be possible without one important step.

"We wouldn't be able to have the park open if it weren't for lifeguards," said lifeguard Bri Russell.

Splash Country takes pride in how well trained and receptive their lifeguards are to keep you and your family safe.

"There's so much involved in the training and it's a lot to ask," Russell said.

Water safety day is not just about the world record swim lesson but also that your family has access to key safety tips.

"To be a water park in the community and to offer education and water safety it just seems like the responsible thing to do and what we should do," said Dollywood publicist Amber Davis.

Some of the swimmers said the lesson had a lot to offer. Each participant had a different reason on why they thought learning how to swim was important.

Results are still pending on the world record.

The event is sponsored by LeConte Medical Center, The Dr. Robert F. Thomas Foundation, WATE 6 On Your Side and Star 102.1.

The worldwide swim lesson happens at water parks around the globe on June 24. Swimmers of all ages come to take part in hopes of breaking the world record. Last year, 38,170 people took part. The goal this year is 40,000.

Dollywood's Splash Country is taking part in the event from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. that day at Mountain Waves wave pool. Vendor booths are open until 2 p.m. where people can learn about water and sun safety and also received a Splash Pass, which they can turn in for a chance to win two season passes to Dollywood's Splash Country.
