Relay for Life raises awareness and funds for cancer

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WATE) - World's Fair Park is set to host one of the American Cancer Society's biggest fundraisers that will help bring awareness to one of the nation's biggest killers.

Relay for Life is ACS' flagship charity event and will take place locally at World's Fair Park Friday, April 13 from 6:30-11:30 p.m. This event serves as a merger of the UT Relay and the Knox Relay. The festivities will get kicked off at 7 p.m. with the Opening Ceremony, followed by the Survivor Ceremony at 7:30. 

There will be a wing eating contest at 9 p.m. The contest takes place in between two musical performances beginning with Divas &m The Black Tie Affair at 8 and Jimmy Cheeks at 10. 

This is the first year the Relay for Life will feature a beer garden. Beers will be just $3 and all proceeds will go to RFL.

Between walks, the event will feature various campsites to participate in games, activities and entertainment while learning more about how to better advocate for the American Cancer Society.

Road To Recovery Mission Tent presented by Harper Auto Square gives the public an opportunity to learn more about the mission behind ACS and the services provided. In addition, sign-up for Road To Recovery which drives patients to and from treatment. 

At the time of writing, Relay for life had raised nearly $100,000, about $20,000 away from their goal of $120,000.  The event is presented by Food City who has raised over $26,000 this year for Relay For Life with $16,000 of that in employee donations.
