HARRIMAN (WATE) -- Roane State Community College has received $511,257 in new grant funding to enhance student services, officials announced Monday.
A $435,396 grant will help the college better serve adults, especially those who are out of work and seeking training and education.
A $75,861 grant will help Roane State provide students with a free study skills course.
The $435,396 grant was awarded under the U.S. Department of Education's Innovative Strategies in Community Colleges for Working Adults and Displaced Workers Program.
Roane State partnered with the Tennessee Technology Centers and Local Workforce Investment Area 4, in collaboration with Kingston-based Worldwide Interactive Network.
The grant will fund several initiatives to help those out of work enroll in training to improve their job skills.
For example, the grant will offset costs of study skills and technology workshops, provide opportunities for career assessment and help adults prepare academically for college.
The $75,861 grant was awarded under the U.S. Department of Education's College Course Materials Rental Initiative Program.
The funds will pay for training, textbooks and other costs of a new study skills course that Roane State plans to offer free of charge in fall 2010.
The course will teach students specific study strategies, enabling them to become more effective learners throughout their college careers.
The grants are part of Roane State's five-year SAILS (Students Achieving Improved Learning Strategies) project, an initiative to help students become better learners.
