Tennessee court upholds anonymous tip on tractor-trailer driver

CHATTANOOGA (AP) -- The Tennessee Supreme Court has upheld lower courts in ruling that an anonymous tip about a trucker's driving justified law enforcement making a stop.

The Chattanooga Times Free Press reports that the justices said in the decision released Tuesday that the anonymous report of reckless driving indicated a "sufficiently high risk of imminent injury or death to members of the public to warrant immediate intervention by law enforcement officials."

The case involved the 2003 arrest of Jerry Lee Hanning on Interstate 75 in Louden County.

Hanning was driving an 18-wheeler and was found to be intoxicated when approached by police.

Hanning contended police did not have reasonable suspicion to stop him.
