DUI traffic stop leads Clinton police to arrest former Michigan prisoner

Posted: Updated:

CLINTON (WATE) -- When a Clinton police officer stopped a suspected drunk driver Tuesday night, it led to the arrest of a man who served time in Michigan for breaking and entering, as well as a prison escape.

The suspect is Norman Barclay, 43.

An officer spotted Barclay's car around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday. His car matched the description of one spotted earlier being driven by a drunk driving suspect.

The officer stopped Barclay at the Rocky Top convenience store on N. Charles Seivers Boulevard.

Police said Barclay didn't cooperate at first, then they learned his identity. His car turned out to be stolen from Michigan.

Barclay is charged with DUI, driving on a revoked license, theft over $10,000, violation of implied consent, being a fugitive and violation of the open container law.

He's being held in the Anderson County Detention Facility.

Police said Barclay will be extradited to Michigan. He was released from prison there on parole in April.

In 1986, Barclay escaped from a Michigan prison. He was recaptured nearly four months later and served a year for his escape.

One of the conditions of his parole is that he's not supposed to leave Michigan.
