KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- A couple of Knoxville area restaurants failed their health inspections this week.

And Food for Thought returned to a Chinese buffet to check improvements after it failed by 20 points a couple of weeks ago.

The failing restaurants had a variety of critical health violations that will require follow-up inspections in the next week or so.

The health department considers any score below 70 as unsanitary.

Failing by four points: Agave Azul Mexican Grill at 4405 Kingston Pike - Grade: 66

Lots of things were dirty here including the cutting boards where food is prepared, the kitchen floor, shelves and the inside of the microwave.

The inspector writes that at one of the employee hand sinks, the water was just a trickle. As a result, employees couldn't wash their hands properly.

Another failing by four: Sonic at 3307 N. Broadway - Grade: 66

Food temperature was a problem here. Hot dogs and chicken in the refrigerator were too warm. Forty-one degrees is the proper holding temperature to slow down the growth of bacteria.

Also, the women's rest room had a dirty floor and toilet.

Passing on the nose: Regas at 318 N. Gay Street - Grade: 70

The inspector wrote that hair was found in the ice cream freezer.

Also, the inside of the microwave was dirty and spatulas were stored dirty.

Another passing on the nose: Pizza Hut at 5338 Millertown Pike - Grade: 70

There was a waste water leak at a hand sink.

Spatulas and large spoons were stored dirty.

No sanitizer was in the dish washer.

Improvements at Wong's Palace, 4009 Chapman Highway

For two years, Wong's Palace has recorded several failing scores so Food for Thought visited recently to see what improvements management has made since the most recent failing grade.

Manager David Chen said the pest control service has driven out the spiders.

Chen also said workers had gotten behind stocking food and the vegetables were accidentally left on the floor.

The re-inspected grade at Wong's Palace is an 82.

Top score of week:

  • Little Caesars at 4748 Centerline Drive - 93

Other top scores:

  • Scotties of Powell at 7143 Clinton Highway - 90
  • Five Guys at 10922 Parkside Drive - 87
  • M.K.'s at 1109 White Avenue - 87

Don't forget, health reports are supposed to be posted where you can see them.
