Former Campbell Co. deputy commits suicide in Caryville

CARYVILLE (WATE) -- A former Campbell County sheriff's deputy committed suicide early Tuesday morning in a parking lot, just hours before he was to face charges of theft in court.

Jessie Bransome, 36, killed himself just after 6 a.m. Tuesday.

According to Caryville Police Chief Bill Widener, Bransome called 911 at 6:03 a.m. to tell dispatchers he was going to commit suicide. He told them he was parked in front of a Chinese restaurant near an Exxon gas station.

Officers responded first to a restaurant in LaFollette, but couldn't locate Bransome or his vehicle.

Another officer responded to a second location, Takumi Chinese Restaurant in Caryville, where they found Bransome dead in his car at 6:17 a.m.

According to police, he died instantly from a gunshot wound near his lower jaw.

Bransome left a note on the dash with a phone number to contact his aunt and uncle in Kentucky.

According to Widener, Bransome may have had criminal problems in another county. He was due in court Tuesday morning on theft charges out of Campbell County.
