Safety review committee created for Knox County Schools

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- Officials have formed a safety review committee for Knox County Schools, Superintendent Dr. Jim McIntyre announced Tuesday.

The committee will review, analyze and assess security protocols and human resource procedures and suggest ways to improve staff and student safety.

Two subcommittees make up the full committee: the Human Resources Work Group and the Safety and Security Work Group.

The committee's first work days are March 1 and 2.

"Our goal is to evaluate and improve the Knox County Schools' human resources and security practices in a strategic and purposeful manner, then to be very transparent in sharing those findings with our community," Dr. McIntyre said in a press release.

The Safety Review Committee has co-chairs:

  • Dr. Ron Stephens – director, National School Safety Center
  • Dr. Deborah Stairs – director, human resources, Oak Ridge National Lab

Members of the Human Resources Work Group are:

  • Dr. Kathy Sims – executive director, human resources, Knox County Schools
  • Dr. June Keel – asst. superintendent, human resources, Metro Nashville Public Schools
  • Dr. Linda Hendricks – VP, human resources, University of Tennessee
  • Jessica Holman – president, Knox County Education Association
  • Adam Parker – principal, Gibbs Elementary School
  • Steve Griffin – chief of security, Knox County Schools
  • Capt. Nate Allen – Knoxville Police Department

A parent representative will be added to this group on Wednesday.

Members of the Safety and Security Work Group are:

  • Lt. Chris Holloway – supervisor, school resource officers, Knox County Sheriff's Office
  • Sgt. Tammy Chaney – supervisor, school resource officers, Knoxville Police Department
  • Rodney Beverly – deputy chief of security, Knox County Schools
  • William "Butch" Crook – chief of security, Metro Nashville Public Schools
  • Dan Gilley – Homeland Security Agency
  • Melissa Johnson – principal, Christenberry Elementary School

When the Safety Review Committee has completed its work, Dr. McIntyre said it will be compiled and shared with the public.
