TBI investigating Campbell County jailers

JACKSBORO (WATE) - Campbell County jailers are the subject of an investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, officials said Thursday.

TBI spokeswoman Kristin Helm says District Attorney General Paul Phillips sent a letter to the TBI in early July asking investigators "to look into some improprieties of jailers."

Helm added that the letter is part of the confidential case file so she can't release it to the public.

Phillips told the LaFollette Press on Tuesday it wouldn't be appropriate for him to elaborate on an ongoing investigation or why he wrote the letter.

He also said there are no allegations against Sheriff Gary Perkins.

The sheriff says he didn't know about the investigation until Tuesday night when a supporter of his opponent sent a text message about it.

"I'm in the process of gathering information and will make a statement at a later date," Sheriff Perkins said.

He also says he's contacting Phillips.
