KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- Many people sought shelter in East Tennessee from Hurricane Katrina. Now the American Red Cross is opening it's doors because the need has become greater.
A temporary shelter has been set up at the local chapter's headquarters on Middlebrook Pike. Two large rooms are being used to house refugees who have travelled here to escape the destruction from the storm.
The rooms contain cots, pillows, blankets and other necessities for people in need. Meals will also be provided free of charge.
Red Cross employees and volunteers have been busy setting up the shelter in preparation for people who may be heading this way. They say they've already received calls from some large families looking for shelter.
"We've gotten many calls from families ready to locate temporarily in this area, who need shelter, who need food," said Chris Davis. "And rather than work with them on a case-by-case basis, we think we're going to get a lot in, so we're putting together a shelter to give them food, a place, a safe place to sleep, a place where they can hopefully take their minds off things for just a little bit."
Although a big influx of people isn't expected, the local shelter can accommodate 50-100 people.
