KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- School children in Fountain City are coming to the aid of a New Orleans family featured on a 6 News Tuesday.

The Beard family is staying in several rooms at a Knoxville hotel after making a two-day treck to escape Hurricane Katrina.

After seeing our story, middle schoolers at Garden Montessori School decided collect food and other goodies to send to the family and make their stay a little easier.

"We're really fortunate to run into really nice people in Tennessee," Kathleen Beard said when told of the students' plan. "We want to thank you."

The fifth, sixth, and seventh graders say they hope to deliver the supplies by this Friday. The Beards expect to be here for several weeks.
