Fake rifle causes local high school to go into lockdown

October 6, 2005

MARYVILLE (WATE) -- A color guard rifle caused a stir at a local high school Thursday morning.

Heritage High School went on lockdown for 20 to 30 minutes after someone reported a student carrying a rifle inside.

But when Blount County Sheriff's Department officers rushed to investigate, they found the rifle was really a "dummy" - a gun stripped down so that it's not able to be fired.

The fake gun is used by the ROTC in drills and ceremonies.
