High speed chase ends in Jefferson County crash


KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- A high-speed pursuit that started in Knox County ended in Jefferson County when the suspect's car collided with a sheriff deputy's cruiser.

Deputies say that the pursuit started on I-40 around 8:20 p.m. after a suspect tried to flee from a hit-and-run accident. Deputies chased the suspect on the wrong side of the interstate for several miles.

According to authorities, the suspect crashed at the I-40 and I-81 split. A sheriff's cruiser also crashed.

Deputies say the suspect was taken into custody and is being treated at UT Medical Center for minor injuries. His name is not being released at this time.

The officer involved is also being treated for minor injuries.
