1 Killed, 3 injured in Maryville wreck

MARYVILLE (WATE) -- One person was killed and three others injured Wednesday in a crash involving several vehicles, including a Blount County school bus.

Melissa Nelams, 42, of LaFayette, La., was killed Wednesday in the accident. Two children in the car with her were treated and released from the hospital.

No students were on board the bus.

Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers say the pile-up began when the bus was headed south and veered into oncoming traffic to avoid a car trying to turn left in front of the bus on Highway 321, near Old Glory Road in Maryville.

The bus hit Nelams' car, spinning it and colliding head-on with a third car.

A fourth driver saw the crash ahead and tried to avoid the wreckage. He instead ran off the road went over a steep embankment.

No criminal charges have been filed in connection with Wednesday's crash.
