Knox Co. medical examiner's contract terminated

KNOXVILLE (WATE) -- Knox County Commission voted Monday to terminate the contract with county Medical Examiner Dr. Sandra Elkins.

Elkins was hospitalized in February after an incident involving Knoxville police.

In a report, police say the expert forensic pathologist had to be restrained by officers in the department with which she routinely works when they arrived at her Cherokee Bluff home.

Elkins threatened to shoot a policeman and to commit suicide.

She had temporarily stepped down from her post before that, citing medical problems from a months-long fight to expose alleged misuse of taxpayer-funded resources by a private pathology firm.
